Despite the snowstorms and school closings this winter, Maryland schools will not be extending their school year into late June. Public schools in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties will be out before the Juneteenth holiday (June 18).

Summer Solstice

The Smithsonian will have special programs (June 18-21) for the whole family at the National Zoo, the National Museum of American History and more to celebrate the summer solstice (June 21).

The National Geographic Museum of Exploration opens this month (June 26), with high-tech, hands-on exhibits built for all ages.

Happy Birthday, America

Keep an eye on the National Mall for a number of events this month to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, including the Great American State Fair, beginning June 25.

Battle of the Barbecue

The Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle shuts down historic Pennsylvania Avenue later this month (June 27-28) for cooking demos, free tastings and live music; free for ages 12 and younger
