An urban suburb located just 7 miles from Washington, D.C., Hyattsville, Maryland is a vibrant community with a rich history and lively arts scene. Named for city founder Christopher Clark Hyatt, the area was already partially settled by 1859 when he opened a store and began delivering mail. The town was officially incorporated in 1886. Hyattsville underwent major redevelopment in the early 2000s, including updated residential and retail areas in the Gateway Arts District. The Hyattsville Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, with more than 600 structures within the designated area.
Festival Fun
Featuring more than 100 artists, the annual Hyattsville Arts Festival, held every September, is a family-friendly annual tradition with food trucks, local breweries, musicians and more. In the same month, Porchfest highlights the local community with musical performances, poster contests and more spanning yards and porches across the town.
Parks Aplenty
Packed into Hyattsville’s 2.7 square miles of land are 15 public parks, many of which are specialized spaces designed to entertain all interests. With a skatepark, a dog park and more, Hyattsville’s wide open spaces have outdoor activities for all ages. Make sure to check out the Emerson Street Food Forest and the McClanahan Food Forest, where community members are welcome to come and harvest the seasonally available produce grown year round in pesticide-free gardens.
