When my husband was a little boy in the 1960s, his father would sneak him into Redskins games tucked inside a long overcoat. The family could afford tickets for two adults, but the cost of an additional ticket was not within their budget. Modern security checks now prevent game-day stowaways, but the decades-long quest to enjoy sports events at a reasonable price still weighs upon today’s parents.
“In fact, U.S. sports are more expensive than ever before. The price of attending an NFL or MLB game rose, on average, by around 300% from 1991 to 2023,” according to the Fan Cost Index. For example, when a family of four goes to a Washington Nationals baseball game, tickets average $46.02 each ($184.08 total). The tally really grows when you toss in hot dogs at $7.99 each, a $15.40 beer for dad, a few snacks or souvenirs and parking.
But if your kids are excited about sports and want to see how the Big Dogs play, Minor League teams offer much more affordable alternatives. Tickets range from $10 to $30, hot dogs sell for around $3.50 and cold brews fall in the $4.60 to $5.70 range. Many stadiums offer discounts for children, seniors and military personnel or host special promotional nights with reduced ticket rates.
Fortunately, the DMV and Chesapeake Bay region are home to a variety of sports franchises where families can spend time together watching balls get kicked, thrown or hit — without breaking the bank. Organized by sport, the following guide helps locate teams in your area.

Lacrosse, Rugby & Ultimate Frisbee
Outside of mainstream sports, several athletic activities are rising in popularity, especially in K-12 schools and colleges. North America’s oldest sport, lacrosse, dates back to a 13th-century Native American stick game that is now attracting modern fans because it’s fast-moving and fun to watch and play. Rugby, which originated centuries ago in the British Isles, has made its way across the pond and is cultivating American fans with its rapid pace, complex rules and smashing physicality. And frisbee, which began as a plastic toy, is now the centerpiece of ultimate leagues across the country. Your family can see these sports played live by regional teams:

Soccer

Discussions are underway with Major League Soccer’s DC United to bring an outdoor stadium, women’s pro soccer team, men’s Minor League team and a youth academy to Baltimore. In the meantime, Minor League outdoor teams nearby include Montgomery County’s Maryland Bobcats (marylandbobcatsfc.com) and Christos FC (christosfc.com) in Gambrills, Maryland. Indoor soccer fans can catch the Baltimore Blast (baltimoreblast.com), a popular professional team that arrived in 1980, has won several league championships and plays at the SECU Arena in Towson, Maryland.
Soccer mania is spreading across the region in two other towns. Launched in 2022 with a men’s team, Annapolis Blues FC (annapolisblues.com) added a women’s team in 2025. Its Kicks for Kids program and family game days invite the entire community to enjoy the action. Arriving in Northern Virginia in 2019 as an affiliate of DC United, Loudoun United FC (loudoununitedfc.com) brings championship-level play to the Washington, D.C. area, along with kids’ soccer camps and community enrichment programs.
