Up until the early 1980s, Ashburn was mostly made up of farmland, but today it’s a major hub for technology. The neighborhood in Loudoun County, Virginia, nicknamed Data Center Alley, was home to the AOL headquarters up until 2023, and now has more than 70 data centers, 25 of which are operated by Amazon.
