I really like this toy. My son already has the Crayola Crayon Maker, so I thought he would love this too, and he does. As a parent, I also liked it because it allows him to be creative and kept his quietly busy for a long time. He is able to make up colors and cool names for each one of them. Also I thought it was great for him to make personalized gifts for friends.
My son LOVES this toy. He could not wait to take it out of the box. Once he did open it, he did not want to stop using it. For about three days in a row he asked if he could make more markers. He is almost nine, and of course the first time he used it, he did not read the instructions or really see what was in it. He apparently just dumped the box out and started using it, so obviously it is easy to use. He made about five markers before I knew he had even opened it.
He called me into the room to watch him make markers. It was not until then that he realized it came with tweezers to remove the marker wick to put it in the marker tube. As you can imagine, he managed to get marker ink all over his hands (and some on my carpet). The ink washed off his hands easily enough, but it did not come out of my carpet. Spot cleaning and carpet shampoo didn’t help, so I would suggest you have them not make the markers in a carpeted area. I do not know if it will wash off of wood, tile or other hard surface.
The Marker Maker includes the Marker Maker unit itself, components for making 16 markers (tips, tubes, wicks, measuring tubes and tweezers), 3 bottles of ink (blue, red and yellow), mixing guide, marker labels and 2 marker storage boxes. I pointed out the mixing guide to my son. Once he realized what it was, he started measuring to make the colors as displayed on the guide. He has now completely used up all 16 markers and is ready for a refill. Refills online are $9.99. If I had not received this item, I would have purchased it for myself. I also would buy and probably will end up buying this as a gift. Now if I can just get that stain out of carpet.
