In advance of the Washington Family Summer Camp & Activities Fair, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21 from noon-3 p.m. at Tyson’s Corner Center, Washington Family editor Lindsay VanAsdalan appeared on news show Living Local DMV to discuss how parents can prepare for summer camp early.
VanAsdalan was interviewed by anchors Charis Gomez and Corinna Delgado, who echoed the sentiment that the beginning of the year is the best time for parents to think about signing their children up for a summer camp.
“A lot of camps fill up fast, so now is the prime time to be registering for camp,” VanAsdalan said.
The amount of camp options available can be overwhelming for any parent dipping their toe into the world of summer camps for the first time, with options ranging from overnight camps with a wide range of activities to day camps specializing in subjects like the arts and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
“Your child will be the one who knows best what they want to do in the summer, which can help you come up with questions for camps you’re looking at,” VanAsdalan explained. “Do they want more free time this summer, do they want more of a structured schedule, do they want to play with a lot of other kids or are they looking for more independent work? There’s a lot of ways you can find out what they’re looking for, knowing what kinds of options are out there.”
During the interview, she also suggested school-based camps. A schedule similar to the school schedule a child is used to may help them focus on making new friends and trying new activities.
