Songa Designs

Songa Designs is a community of women who create captivating homemade designs. All items are proudly made in Rwanda. With a full line of necklaces, earrings, headbands and belts, you can be sure to find something you will love!

I had the opportunity to review the Isla Headband, and I loved the design and fun colors. It served its purpose of fashionably holding my hair back. But when you take a look at these items and realize another woman handmade them, you can really appreciate them.

Their mission is straightforward: “Songa exists to create jobs for skilled women in under-resourced countries so they can earn their way to economic independence.” Songa Designs is providing Rwanda women with jobs and a creative outlet they truly enjoy.

Songa works with cooperatives, or independent businesses, that operate under the strict rules of the Rwanda Cooperative Association. Most cooperatives average 20 artisan members and specialize in one material (like banana leaf) or skill (like sewing). You can see who made the item you purchased and even read a little about each woman. It is a wonderful thing to unite together as women and support one another.

Songa Designs products are made with local materials such as recycled fabric, recycled paper beads, banana leaf fiber, pewter metal, sisal plant and cow horn. What these women then do with these materials is a work of art! I love my headband and received multiple compliments on it. It is both practical and beautiful. I am proud to say I support this brand and their mission to better equip these women.
