This Weekend: Holiday Tea, Harry Potter and a Naked Mole Rat

Looking for some fun things to do with your kids this weekend? From the festive to all-around fun, here are just a few of the many events happening on Saturday and Sunday in the DMV.

Maker Morning at the Hirschhorn

During the darkest month of the year, brighten up your weekend at the Hirshhorn! Makers of all ages are welcome to join us to mix light and color, play with shadows and create their own LED light sculpture with Boolean Girl.

Read to a Dog

Drop in and read to a dog! Elementary-aged children can choose a book to read to a therapy dog at Kensington Park Library. Reading is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Washington Ballet’s Nutcracker

This uniquely D.C. telling of the classic Nutcracker story is a wonderful way to get in the holiday spirit. The ballet is set in Georgetown and features an array of adorable animals, historical figures and dances from around the world.

Holiday Tea the Willard International

It’s the perfect weekend to experience a family-friendly holiday tea in Willard International’s famed peacock alley. Sit back and relax with tea (or hot chocolate) A children’s menu is available.

Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forrest Experience  

Once the sun goes down, the woods fill with magical creatures and wizarding wonders. Watch out for Nifflers, engage in a battle of the wands and enjoy Butter Beer along this magical trail featuring creatures and scenes from both the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films.

Mount Vernon by Candlelight

Experience Mount Vernon in a whole new way. Travel back to 1772 and be George and Martha Washington’s guest for the holidays. Take a candlelit tour of the grounds, see the mansion decorated for a Christmas feast, take a dancing lesson, and visit Aladdin the Christmas Camel. Be sure to enjoy live music along with cider and gingerbread snaps before leaving.

Naked Mole Rats get Dressed: The Rock Experience                      

Get ready for a new, high-energy musical to rock the holiday season. When clothing suddenly falls from the sky, Wilbur J. Mole Rat stuns the colony with his decision to get dressed! In a community where baring is caring and skin is in, can Wilbur find the courage to rock to the rhythm of his own electric guitar? Based on Mo Willem’s beloved picture book, the show explores what can happen when we have the courage to be ourselves.
