Writer’s Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in Washington FAMILY Magazine.

We publish regional parenting publications with distribution throughout several metropolitan areas. For a current list of our publications, visit our web site atwww.washingtonFAMILY.com. Our readers are families with children, infants through age 18, and we strive to uncover issues that are important to their daily lives.

Most of our writers are local professionals who share their expertise with our readers. We accept with enthusiasm work from freelance writers. Since we plan the editorial content for each magazine at least 3 to 6 months in advance, we request that all submissions arrive on disk or via email at least 3 months prior to publication. (Example: deadline for the May issue is Feb. 1)

Our preferred feature-length story is 800-900 words, but if you have longer articles you feel would make an exceptional feature for our readers, we will be happy to review them. Please email our editor with a detailed query or brief outline concerning each topic before sending any articles. Electronic and disk submissions should be in Microsoft Word.

Guidelines for Articles:

  • 800-900 Words
  • Microsoft Word Format with NO special formatting (i.e.: bold and italic fonts or underlining, additional spacing and words in all caps).
  • Email articles and queries to[email protected]
  • Proof Read Your Work!

Washington FAMILY Magazine has an extremely loyal group of readers and advertisers. For this reason, we request exclusive rights inside our readership areas. We do not accept manuscripts that have been simultaneously submitted to other publications in our local regions. Our average payment for one-time reprint rights is $50 for average-length feature stories published in ANY OR ALL FAMILY Magazines. Payment and one tear sheet will be sent following publication. Although the article may appear in more than one of our publications AND WILL APPEAR IN THE ARCHIVES OF OUR WEB SITE, only one tear sheet will be sent.

All purchases of 1 time print rights include the right to place the article in the archive section of our web site.www.theFAMILYmagazine.com  If you do not want your article to appear on our web site inside our archives, do not submit it to our magazine.

We encourage email correspondence with our editorial department. This will ensure that articles and queries are received, reviewed, and responded to in a timely manor. Email correspondence also allows us to establish a friendly communications relationship with each contributing writer. Our editorial department receives hundreds of submissions monthly, so please be patient while awaiting our response. Please direct all editorial email to:[email protected] .
