Washington FAMILY earned national recognition at The Parenting Media Association 2023 Design and Editorial Awards Program on Friday with three awards, including a silver award for overall writing.
The awards ceremony was held Nov. 3 at the PMA’s annual conference in Chicago, Illinois.
Each parenting publication awardee received gold, silver or bronze in editorial, design and digital categories against publications of a similar size nationally.

The magazine staff earned a silver award in the “Overall Writing” category for its clear text with an emphasis on story craft and broad coverage on a number of important topics for families.
“The writing is consistently deliberate and direct — no wasted words here. Just solid stories that serve readers well,” judges explain.
Washington Family also won two bronze awards—one for the “Single-Page Design” for the “What to Ask” page in its extended “Inclusive” section, appearing in the Oct. 2022 issue, and another in “Profile” for Emily Rose Barr’s “My Song is My Superpower.”

In its design, judges commended its “bright and catchy colors” and commitment to the concept, noting, “The typography, graphic elements, and photography work in tandem to communicate and inform this noteworthy query.”
Barr’s story features a local artist whose own struggles with mental health had been instrumental in how she was able to help students.

“This profile gives good insight into the main character while putting her story in the context of her work with students,” judges explain.
