Valentine’s Day Style Tips for the Busy Mom

Believe it or not, Valentine’s Day is upon us. The day of hearts and love and…oh geez, what should I wear? Never fret. As a busy, working mom of three, I understand the value of ease – even when it comes to special occasion looks. Here are four easy steps to put together Valentine’s Day-worthy looks for date night.

You don’t have to wear red on Valentine’s Day.

Not everyone has a red dress. Don’t worry. You don’t have to run around shopping for one. Make use of what you have. This year, I am wearing a black pencil skirt and a silk champagne blouse with a statement necklace and sparkly heels. The skirt and blouse are from my work wardrobe. I simply stepped it up with the shoes and accessories for a sexy, sophisticated look.

Layer your jewelry if you don’t have a statement necklace.

Not all my clients have a collection of great necklaces to dress up their everyday looks. But most of my clients do have a pearl necklace from their grandmother or a pendant necklace from their Aunt Ethel. Wear them together. Create a statement by combining basic jewelry out of your own collection. It is a great way to get more mileage out of what you already own while creating a statement that is all you.

The easiest way to do this is by putting together several necklaces of different lengths to avoid it looking messy and tangled. If you need to lengthen or shorten a necklace, you can buy an extender, but if you are in a crunch, DIY with some safety pins. (Just remember to wear your hair down to cover the pins if you are going DIY.)

This will dress up any look you put together whether you have that red dress or want to add sparkle to the black one in your closet.

Break out your heels even if you are staying in.

When you have a family, the opportunities to look and feel dressy are few and far between. Don’t minimize the opportunity to wear some fun shoes – even if what you are planning isn’t a fancy evening out. Those heels that have been collecting dust since your first baby? Dust them off.

Play with makeup.

I am not a makeup queen. My assistant’s eyes go wide when I wear lipstick. But Valentine’s Day is one of those occasions when it’s fun to play with makeup. I plan to go for a smoky, shimmery eye and a natural glossy lip. The easiest way to smoke it up on the eye is with Trish McEvoy’s Topaz 24-hour eye shadow and liner. Just a couple of swipes around the top and bottom equals instant evening look.
