Lullaby Earth Crib Mattress

When my husband and I found out we were pregnant last Christmas, we knew right away that we wanted to use as many chemical-free baby products as we could.  So, you can imagine how excited we were when asked to review the Lullaby Earth Crib Mattress.

According to Lullaby Earth’s website, all of their crib mattresses are “composed primarily of food-grade polyethylene and completely free of polyurethane foam, vinyl/PVC, PFC, antibacterial treated fabrics, as well as questionable fire retardants and known allergens.”

This information was a huge selling point for us, especially after researching the possible effects of some of those chemicals on little immune systems.  In addition, Lullaby Earth has designed and developed the first ever recyclable crib mattress, which I found very impressive.

Although we knew the inside of the mattress was made to our liking, we began to worry about the mattress on the outside and whether or not its chemical-free components would equal a firm, durable product.

I can say we were pleasantly surprised as soon as we opened the packaging.  The first thing we noticed was the absence of that new mattress smell.  It did not have a plastic or chemical smell at all, allowing us to put it into use right away rather than letting it “air out” as we had done with some of our baby’s furniture.

Another plus was that the waterproof material on the mattress was barely noticeable, unlike other waterproof crib mattresses that I have seen which seem to have an extra layer to it, making it bulky and noisy.  Finally, when testing the fit of the mattress in our baby’s crib, we were happy to discover a firm, snug fit with no gaps, both with and without the sheet.

Fast forward five months and we could not be happier with this mattress!  Our daughter, Elizabeth, began sleeping in her crib at night beginning at three months and during the day for naps at four and a half months.

We were very worried about the transition from her inclined, cushioned bassinet in our room to the flat, firm mattress but, after night one, she slept better and longer than ever before.  At five months, she is now sleeping 12 hours a night!

The mattress still remains snug against the crib slats and has not lost its shape or firmness.  Also, changing the sheet could not be easier!  After reading other reviews of various brands of crib mattresses, changing the sheet seemed to be the number one complaint from parents due to the weight of the mattress.  Some mentioned needing two people to complete the task.  Well, I have been suffering with a bit of postpartum joint pain and this mattress is so lightweight, 6.9 pounds to be exact, that lifting it in and out of the crib is a pain-free, one person process.

All in all, we are very pleased with the Lullaby Earth Super Lightweight Crib Mattress and really have no complaints.  I would definitely recommend this to other parents, especially those who are looking for a chemical-free, very lightweight mattress for their new bundle of joy.
