I was introduced to the Llama Llama series by author and illustrator Anna Dewdney when my son was born. I was enamored by the catchy, rhyming titles but also grew to love the stories. Each one had a subtle message of comfort or a behavior lesson that we could use when encountering troubles with the developmental milestones (sleeping alone, missing mom, bullying, etc.). I was happy to check out the new line of Llama plush characters from Kids Preferred, LLC. They make great accompaniments to the books and further encourage a child’s engagement with the stories.
Kids Preferred offers three plush llama options, all wearing the signature red pajamas: a large plush holding a yellow bear (20 x 13 x 16 inches), a bean bag plush (2.2 x 2.8 x 9 inches), and a small hand puppet (13 inches tall). We were sent the hand puppet to play with, and my kids were both excited when it arrived.
The puppet is a bit small, making it the perfect size for a toddler to play and pretend with, while challenging for adult hands. I did manage to get my fingers in the puppet and attempt to read one of the stories. One nice thing about the puppet’s size is that it does not get in the way and is easy to handle while also holding up a book.
The puppet provides a great opportunity for little ones to use their imagination and pretend to be the llama; my kiddos made up a new story for him! The puppet was very soft, yet durable and well-made and would be suitable any age of child. It was easy to wipe off spills, though I don’t think I would recommend sending it through the washing machine.
The large plush and bean bag plush would both make great companions for any Llama Llama-loving child. The bean bag would make a better choice for younger children, since it’s a bit smaller and easier to grab onto. Though we didn’t see them in person, both look adorable and cozy. I could see them easily becoming a “lovey” that is snuggled during story time and throughout the night.
Although I always say we have too many stuffed animals, the Llama Llama puppet added something new and unique to our collection, and I already see my children playing with it more often than other plush toys. The plush animals would make great gifts, especially paired with a Llama Llama book. They would also be great for teaching or children’s libraries, especially the puppet, which could make lots of appearances at story times!
