Lisa Moser’s Cowboy Boyd and Mighty Calliope

Cowboy Boyd and Mighty Calliope are different than all other cowboys and their animals. Usually cowboys ride horses. However, Calliope isn’t a horse; she’s a rhinoceros. She is slow and big, instead of fast and sleek. Even though Calliope doesn’t look like an ordinary side-kick, Cowboy Boyd really believes in her.

They arrive on the Double R Ranch to work for Rancher Rose. Every job that Boyd and Calliope are given to do just doesn’t work out right. Calliope was able to move fence posts, but it took a really long time to do it. When they went out to find stray horses, they bring back other animals, including a coyote. When Calliope is supposed to stay in the pasture for the night, she breaks through fences and walls, and climbs into the top bunk in the bunkhouse.

Rancher Rose finally says that it isn’t going to work out. Boyd and Calliope will have to move on to another ranch in the morning. However, a storm hits and all the cattle run away. When ranch hands Slim and Hardtack aren’t able to round them up, Boyd and Calliope try. Calliope manages to not only round up the cattle, but she brings them all back home to ranch. Rancher Rose offers them their job back, and they get to stay at the Double R Ranch.

My daughter really likes this story. I can’t begin to count how many times we have read this in the last couple weeks. You find yourself rooting for Calliope, even though you know a rhinoceros wouldn’t be able to work on a ranch. The pictures are adorable, and help to suck you right into the story. I definitely recommend this book!
