The Kinsa Smart Thermometer is an innovative thermometer you use in conjunction with your smart phone and the free Kinsa app. It can be used for all ages, but is especially kid-friendly since it is virtually unbreakable and has a game for children to play while the device reads their temperature.
I was really impressed when I first received the product and looked at the packaging. It’s clean, bright and provides a nice overview of the product features right on the box.
I downloaded the free app and it was user friendly and easy to set up. (Compatible with iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 5s, 5c, 5, 4s; Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Note 3, Note 2; Samsung Galaxy S6, S5, S4, S3; Nexus 6; and other devices.)
It first asked me to enter the lot number of my thermometer, then a tutorial explained the contents of the package and gave instructions for how to set it up on the phone. Next, I made profiles (names, date of birth, and sex) for each member of my family on the app in order to start tracking temperatures and symptoms.
I first tested the thermometer on my 4 year-old daughter and put it in her mouth. The Kinsa can read temperatures orally, under the arm or rectally. The app asks you to select the type of reading you have chosen. Then the bubble-popping game appeared on the app and my daughter enjoyed playing while waiting for the temperature reading.
I then decided to try under the arm to compare temperature readings. Something may have gone wrong, or maybe orally is just more accurate, because the under arm temperature was 3.5 degrees lower.
I tried to get my 2 year-old daughter to take her temperature but she wasn’t going to let me do it without a struggle. I plan on showing her the game next time and have her watch her big sister do it first to make her feel more comfortable. I also tested it on myself and my husband. Our readings were normal and seemed accurate. I like that the thermometer completes the reading within 10 seconds; especially helpful with squirmy children. It also gives the option to record other symptoms like chills, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.
My bet is this product will be very useful over the winter when I have two young daughters in preschool. Inevitably, they will come down with something at least once this year. I have never been good about tracking their temperatures, but this device and app it does it all for me. It even tracks the time of day and allows you to take pictures (of a rash, sore throat, etc). It will be so easy to just pull up the information on my phone during doctor visits. I will definitely recommend this thermometer to other moms.

Update: Kinsa released their Smart Ear Thermometer a few weeks ago. It is virtually the same as the stick thermometer, except works wirelessly (with or without the corresponding app). The ear thermometer retails for $60 and is available at Target stores, Buy Buy Baby and more – including Amazon!
