Crafting One-of-a-Kind Jewelry
Is Easier Than You’d Think
Priceless Prints is a company out of Shenandoah, IA, that specializes in free-form fingerprint charms captured in pure silver by Prairie Creations. The charms are creative and original works of art, crafted by hand.
I recently had the opportunity to create my own work of art. I received a kit, which included the instructions, a brown envelope with silver, a piece of practice clay, a mylar square to protect the silver clay, a small box to return the dried piece of clay in, and a pre-addressed return label.
I must admit, at first, I was a little intimidated. The end result looked so special that I was afraid I would really mess this up. I read the instructions, read them again, and just for good measure, slept on it a night or two before actually re-reading them and attempting the project.
It really was simple and I was over-thinking it. Inside the kit, I was excited about the examples showing the heirloom quality these special pieces have. I really like the options to enhance your print charm with pendants, crystals and chains. Medallions are also an option. Keep in mind that this kit is for the charm only. If you decide to try one of these kits, you will need to decide if you would like your charm on a bracelet or necklace, and purchase that piece separately.
Once I was confident I knew what I was doing, and had decided to use both of my children’s fingerprints, I instructed them to turn their fingers into a shape of a heart and press into the practice clay. I was too scared to try too many times and since it worked easily, I had them do the same into the silver clay.
Truth be told, I should have had them practice with the practice clay a few more times. I do think they could have pressed and flattened and molded the piece a little more aggressively. Afraid to mess anything up, I only had them attempt it once. I then quickly found a hiding spot for the silver clay to dry. Once you’ve pressed fingerprints into the silver clay, you will need to dry it out overnight. When deciding how to print your piece, remember that the silver will shrink during the firing process.
The return procedure was super easy and Prairie Creations promptly returned the fired charm to me in beautiful packaging. The whole process was so enjoyable that I would love to make more to add to my collection. I already have a few people in mind that these would make special gifts for. The packaging is high quality and the prices are reasonable.
