The area now known as Springfield started out as part of a plantation in the 18th century and was primarily a rural area until it was developed into suburbs in the 1950s. The opening of the Springfield Town Center in 1973 turned the town into the shopping destination it’s known as today.
Lakeside Beauty
While much of Springfield is suburban, there are still plenty of places to enjoy the region’s natural beauty. Lake Accotink Park is a popular destination for its 55-acre lake, where visitors can go boating and fishing. The park also has a mini golf course, an antique carousel, hiking trails and playgrounds.
Visitors should also check out Hidden Pond Nature Center, a quiet, accessible park with an indoor environmental education center. Parkgoers can enjoy a walk on the center’s self-guided nature trail or feed the center’s resident animals on select days throughout the month.
A Land of LEGOs
Springfield is home to the LEGO Discovery Center Washington, D.C., a must-visit for any kid who loves building with LEGO. Visitors can build their own cities, go on rides and even create their own LEGO minifigures designed to look like them.
