How a College Scholarship Can Change Your Life

(StatePoint) College is a lot of work, from the application process through the last final exam that you take. While applying for scholarships may just sound like an additional task to complete on top of everything else, keep in mind that the potential money you are awarded could just change your life.

Not convinced? The stories of these winners of the Dr Pepper Tuition Giveaway are a testament to the value in pursuing college scholarships:

A “Do or Die Moment”

Sometimes a scholarship award can change the entire course of your life. For Nikki Boon, that’s especially true. Had she not won the 2010 tuition giveaway, she would not have had the resources to move to Nashville and attend Belmont University, where she was offered an internship at the Academy of Country Music, an opportunity that jumpstarted her managerial career. Boon is now the day-to-day manager for country singer, Kane Brown, and does everything for the musician from helping launch albums to managing tours.

“I would not be where I am today without the scholarship money,” says Boon. “It was a do or die moment for me.”

More Time

Garrett Booker’s original intention was to only go to college for one year because that was all he was able to afford. Though after winning scholarship money through the 2012 Dr Pepper tuition giveaway, he was able to earn his degree from Barry University in Miami.

“The additional time in school gave me the time I needed to learn the ins and outs of business and networking,” says Booker, who has worked for luxury apparel brand, Kith managing its Miami location and helping to build stores in Los Angeles and New York. “These are skills that have proven essential to me in my career.”

Easing the Burden

With her award money, Claudia Bergheger, who already had an associate’s degree under her belt, was able to go back to school to earn a bachelor’s degree. The tuition funds from Dr Pepper assisted with purchasing books and a computer, which would have otherwise been a struggle financially. This money also gave her the freedom to pursue worthwhile extracurricular activities that allowed her to network and thrive in her field. She became president of the pre-law society, helped other students prepare for the LSATs and attended a summer law program at John Marshall Law School.

An enduring opportunity for students, Dr Pepper is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Tuition Giveaway, which has awarded over $10 million in tuition to college students throughout the program’s history. Current and future students can take note, as Dr Pepper recently extended its official sponsorship of the College Football Playoff and Presenting Sponsorship of the National Championship Trophy through 2026.
