- The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial—located across the street from the museum, the memorial is the nation’s monument to the more than 24,000 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty; each name hand engraved over the span of 30 years. In the month of April, the names of 345 fallen officers killed in the line of duty will be engraved into the walls of the Memorial. This process starts as a stencil of names laid on the panel to ensure engravings will be made at the proper distance, then surrounded by protective material and sandblasted from multiple angles to create each individual letter until an entire line of names is complete. This repeats until all names are fully engraved, which can take several weeks to complete. These names will then be read aloud and honored during the 37th annual Candlelight Vigil on the National Mall in D.C. on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
