“Green” Tool Set is Fun and Durable

I haven’t met a child yet who does not enjoy building things, taking things apart (i.e. knocking down a block tower) and banging things on other things. Luckily, Green Toys has created a tool set that is just right for these activities!

If you have ever tried to open a toy for an anxious child; only to be met with screws and twist ties just to get it out of its box, not to mention the numerous screws you have to deal with to insert the batteries, you will appreciate the easy  packaging of this tool set. It’s made of cardboard and clearly displays all of the contents and benefits of this “green” toy.

All 15 pieces of the set are made in the USA from 100% recycled plastic milk jugs and do not contain BPA, phthalates (which I just learned are industrial chemicals to make plastics more flexible and resilient), PVC or external coatings; which to my understanding basically translates to ’your babies can chew on them!”  What a bonus!

The kit includes a pink tool box with a green handle to carry the purple and green tools. The phillips screwdriver, flat screwdriver, hammer, saw, wrench and pliers are clearly labeled with their names; which is a great word recognition tool for early readers. It also has nails, bolts, two-hole connectors and nuts that are used along with pre-made holes that are on the tool box itself.

The light pastel colors attracted my daughters right away and the older girls were just as interested as the younger ones. The older ones got right to screwing and unscrewing the bolts and hammering the nails; but quickly found that there was “not much else to do” with the set.

When the older girls were done with the toy, I let the one-year old twins  go at it (keeping the bolts, nuts and nails away from them, as this toy is recommended for children 2 and older). They have really enjoyed using the saw and hammer to beat the furniture, and I am happy to report that the durable, hard plastic tools did not seem to make any scuff marks or dents on the furniture. They carry the tool set like a purse and use the tools to play their instruments.

I am impressed with the quality and sturdiness of the product; but only wish they would add some project instructions. The older age group may enjoy having some foam pieces or other soft material that they could use to create and build items with their kid sized tools.

Green Toys also offers a version of this tool set in blue, red and brown. Priced at $24.99 I think it is a great deal for those with tinkerers at home.
