There are lots of family-friendly activities on the calendar for this weekend, including an origami workshop, an ice carving competition and a live show featuring from everyone’s favorite fuzzy preschooler from the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Daniel Tiger. Sure, you’ll be busy, but don’t worry: the kids can recover when they’re off from school next Monday!

Friday, January 17

Strings & Stories The Northern Virginia Ukulele Society performs a musical storytime for children and their caregivers. Dolley Madison Library, McLean, VA at 10:30 a.m. FREE

“My Fair Lady” Henry Higgins, a linguistics professor, is determined to turn transform young Cockney flower seller Eliza Doolittle into a proper lady in this “sumptuous new production of the most perfect musical of all time.” Catch it before the show closes on Sunday the 19th. Recommended for ages 13 and up. The Kennedy Center, Washington, DC at 7:30 p.m. $39+

Origami + Bonsai: Ancient Arts Collide After a private tour of the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum’s bonsai collection, children will learn how to make four origami animals under the guidance of an experienced origami teacher and artist. Children 6 and up. U.S. National Arboretum, Washington, DC at 10 a.m. $15

MoComCon 2020 Celebrate all things comic at Montgomery County Public Library’s 4th Annual Comic Convention. Open to all ages, the accessible event includes super hero storytime, face painting and button making, plus workshops and exhibits. There will also be a cosplay contest, so come dressed as your favorite comic book, television or movie character! Silver Spring Library, Silver Spring, MD at 11 a.m. FREE

Family Production: “The Pied Piper” The American Pops Orchestra takes children (Pre-K – 3rd grade) on a journey in this musical retelling of the well-known fairy tale. Arena Stage, Washington, DC at 11 p.m. and 2 p.m. $17 – $32

Nature Makerspace: Recycled Art Wall Help build a wall from recycled materials such as egg cartons and newspapers that will be on display in the visitor center for the rest of the month. Supplies will be provided. Registration is required. Black Hill Nature Programs, Boyds, MD at noon. FREE

Winter Ice Festival and Mega Block Ice Carving Competition Spend a “chill” afternoon watching world-renowned ice carvers create “cool” sculptures, relax in an igloo lounge, participate in interactive ice games or take a spin on an ice-less skating rink. Slapshot, the official mascot of the Washington Capitals, will be hanging out for photos. Village at Leesburg, Leesburg, VA at 1 p.m. FREE

Sunday, January 19

Family Fun: Groovy Nate Children’s entertainer and Wolf Trap Teaching Artist, Groovy Nate, exposes kids to various genres of music using exotic instruments and puppet skits. Full food and drink menus are available. Capitol Cider House, Washington, DC at 10:30 a.m. $5

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood LIVE! Daniel Tiger, the beloved PBS KIDS television character, and his friends are coming to DC for a live performance with music, dancing and fun! Warner Theatre, Washington, DC at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. $30-$5
