On the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, the Washington, DC area will hold several events to honor the victims of that tragic day and bring together people of different ages, backgrounds and faiths. Here is a schedule of the events in Washington, DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia.
Washington National Cathedral Commemoration
To mark the anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Washington National Cathedral will call on Americans to honor the memories of those who were lost, heal the wounds caused by terrorism and war, and gain new strength to move forward as a nation.
National Day of Service
September 11, 2012. Greater DC Cares recruits thousands of volunteers to serve at more than 50 nonprofit organizations as a part of the United We Serve. Participants will clean parks, revitalize playgrounds, sort food for the hungry, and much more!
Pentagon Memorial
The memorial commemorates the 184 lives lost in the Pentagon and on American Airlines Flight 77 during the terrorist attacks. The Pentagon Memorial is free and open to the public 24 hours a day. Special services will be held for the families of the victims of 9/11 at the Memorial on September 11, 2012.
U.S. Navy Memorial
September 11, 2012. The Memorial honors victims of 9/11 and fallen military heroes with a wreath laying ceremony led by the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 2002 on the outdoor plaza. Also, an exhibit of photographs features USS New York (LPD-21), the naval ship forged with steel from the World Trade Center towers. New York-based photographer C.R. Richardson’s work includes dramatic images of the innovative ship, as well as candid shots of the crew and first responders who sailed aboard New York when making its triumphant entry into its namesake city on the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Moment of Silence and Flags Across Arlington
September 11, 2012. Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. A moment of silence will be held at 9:37 a.m. to remember the 184 victims of this tragic event. Arlington County will hang U.S. flags from overpasses and buildings in a display of “Flags Across Arlington.” The cemetery is open and the public is welcome to visit.
Women In Military Service For America Memorial
August 11-September 15, 2012. “Still Standing—Still Free” 9/11 Eleven-Year Commemorative Photography Exhibit. See a display of 40 select images taken at the Pentagon on 9/11, some of which have never been presented to the public, including the work of Washington DC area professional photographers Sean Kelley, Joe Pisciotta, Stephen Jaffe and Bob Pugh.
911 Heroes Run – Travis Manion Foundation
Various dates. The run brings communities together throughout the country to honor the sacrifices of all of the heroes of September 11th – veteran, first responder, civilian, and military. Local events are held in Annapolis, Shirlington and Ashburn.
