Attention all dog lovers of the DMV: the annual Running of the Chihuahuas is back at The Wharf this May.

That means that on Saturday, May 4, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., families will be able to see more than 100 chihuahuas competing on a 60-foot racetrack, enjoy an all-breeds costume contest, sip cold drinks at the Pacifico Beer Garden or Tito’s Chihuahua Lounge, grab a photo in the pet booth or with the giant inflatable chihuahua and enjoy live music on District Pier.

Winners of the chihuahua race will take home a dog-friendly swag bag, trophy and cash prizes. Attendees will be able to watch the action paw-by-paw from two giant video screens on the District and Transit Piers.

If your family wants to register your chihuahua for the race, the fee is $30, and registration must be completed through Eventbrite. Walk-ups will only be accepted on race day if spots are still available, so be sure to register ahead of time to guarantee your pup a spot.

The all-breeds dog costume contest will feature adoptable dogs from Rural Dog Rescue. Proceeds from the event will go toward supporting the rescue, which works to save the lives of high-risk dogs who end up in economically challenged, high-kill shelters in rural areas.
