4 Fall Fashion Faves

Melanie Switzer Reilly spent 15 fashion-obsessed years in Los Angeles, CA working in television as a writer, producer and director. She had no plans to leave her sunny enclave, until a “G-man” swept her away to our nation’s capital. They had a beautiful son, moved to the burbs, and she’s since embraced Northern Virginia living. Still a full-time writer and producer, when she’s not making groundbreaking TV, Melanie’s attempting to schedule a date night with her husband, running after her 5-year-old and trying to find someone who can make her a purse out of an old fringe jacket.

FABULOUS FRINGE

Every mom, whether you stay at home with the kids, work full time or any combination of the two, has the right to look great. One sure way to do that is by rocking a few of the latest trends while still making them your own. I’m thrilled to share some of my favorite fall fashion trends and finds. Hopefully they will either inspire your current wardrobe or be the catalyst for your next shopping splurge!

One of my favorite trends I’m so excited is still hot for fall is fringe. Fringe is a major fashion component of the ‘60s and ‘70s boho style that’s also so very hot right now. But you don’t have to look like a tripped-out groupie to rock this look. There are plenty of ways to add some fringe to your wardrobe that will still say class, with just enough sass.

For instance, check out this gorgeous fall bag by Vince Camuto. It comes in two stunning fall colors basic black and camel, with just a hint of fringe on the side, making it the perfect day-to-night bag. If that doesn’t knock your socks off, fringe has also entered the pantheon of the essential fall accessory…the scarf! I’m just dying to get my hands on one of these fringe infinity scarves by Esley. It comes in six delicious colors and is sure to make a basic dress or even jeans and a t-shirt pop. Fringetastic!

BLINGY BROOCHES

I have to admit, at first, the brooch trend scared the pants off me. The last thing we moms want is to feel or look older…or for goodness sake, to look mumsy! But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.

My favorite way to wear this trend is on a jean jacket. The brooch can be placed on any color or style — from your basic blue, to distressed, or even white. And don’t be afraid to wear two at a time, or (gasp!) even three!  And best of all, you’re sporting the trend, but don’t look like you’re about to be wheeled off to the senior center. So go ahead and raid grandma’s jewelry box if you have to and get pinning.

OVER-THE-KNEE BOOTS

If you invest in one statement piece this season, make it a pair of over-the-knee boots. I don’t know about you, but this trend makes my knees weak with excitement. Thankfully, there are many ways to rock these boots. Whether you pair them with your basic leggings, skinny jeans or even dresses, they’re a guaranteed showstopper.

And if you’re a first timer and a bit timid, there are plenty of styles that cover just a smidge of the knee, keeping it chic and oh-so comfortable. Feast your eyes on this luxe pair from Vince Camuto. They fall not too far over the knee, come in black and brown, and have an oh-so-perfect heel height, equaling total sophistication!

CLASSY CAPES

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s just a fabulous trendy mom picking her child up from school in her killer cape. This is another trend I’m thrilled is back because it gives us a break from our every-day jackets. Even though we are superheroes, let’s talk about how to wear these without looking like a caped crusader. On second thought, donning one of these beauties and using it to whip by all that pesky beltway traffic sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?

The latest trend for capes this fall is wearing them a little longer, either at the knee or slightly below the knee for dramatic effect. And the cape choices this year are as endless as the pumpkin spice — you can opt for one color, or go with plaid, stripes or textures to shake it up.  For the most balanced look, let the cape provide the volume on top, and pair with skinny jeans, leggings or tights on the bottom. I’d suggest this one from Zara to send you flying into fall with style!
