Befriend Some Puppets

The National Capital Puppetry Festival is bringing the fun to Facebook Live with a virtual kid-friendly puppet show performed by talented puppeteers from both far and near. Don’t forget to check the line-up for the rest of the festival events this weekend, too! Saturday, Aug. 22 & Sunday, Aug. 23. 9-11 a.m. Free.

Spot Some Critters

If you’re looking for a socially-distanced way to make new friends, you’re in luck: A team-based scavenger hunt is taking place at the National Zoo. Answer trivia, snap some photos and visit the zoo’s animals along the way. The top team of the day wins prizes! Sunday, Aug. 23, 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. $20. Registration required.

Visit the Wizarding World

The Hogwarts Express may not be leaving Platform 9 3/4 any time soon, but you can still explore the world of Harry Potter. This expert-led virtual tour of the Harry Potter film sites of London includes sights such as the London Eye, Borough Market and more. Make sure you’ve got your butterbeer nearby when you tune in! Sunday, Aug. 23, 11 a.m-12:30 p.m. $10. Registration required.

Fish with Friends

Break out your inner angler this weekend! Come out to Diamond Teague Park for a free, socially-distant night of fishing. Gear will be provided if needed, and there will be volunteers and Earth Conservation Corps staffers to help as well. Friday, Aug. 21, 5-8 p.m. Free.

Watch a Movie in the Moonlight

Nothing beats an outdoor movie in the summertime. Make the trek out to Van Dyck Park this weekend to watch the family favorite “Mulan.” There will be marked circles on the ground to aid in social distancing, so every guest should feel safe. Make sure to bring your own blankets and chairs, too. Friday, Aug. 21, 8-10 p.m. Free.

See a Puppet Princess

This sure is the weekend for puppet fans! The Puppet Co. Playhouse will be showing a puppet re-telling of the story of Cinderella this weekend through their Facebook page. So whether you’re a fairy tale fanatic, or just want to show out in support of the Glen Echo-based puppet company, this event is for you and your family. Friday, Aug. 21, 10:30 a.m. Free.

Go Down Under

Although travel is mostly on hold for the time being, you can still get a taste for Australia this weekend through Montgomery County Public Libraries’ virtual celebration of the county, complete with music, comedy, storytelling and more! And yes, the “more” includes didgeridoos! Saturday, Aug. 22, 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Free.
