Susan Wright...
Susan Wight comes from an
interesting blend of experiences. As Virginia's former top
female steeplechase jockey two years in a row, she knows
what it takes to make it to the finish line first. She was a
'stay at barn mom' who trained and raced Steeplechase horses
for a living for ten years while raising her daughter. She
then went to work for Xerox and Hughes Aircraft, in computer
design work. Later she worked for Xerox. In 1997 she decided
to join Mary Kay Inc, based in Dallas TX after being laid
off from both Xerox and Hughes. In her first six months at
Mary Kay she earned the use of her first company car. In ten
months she became a Director, mentoring other women across
the country. She has since earned three free cars and two
diamond rings for her work helping other women. Her forte is
motivation. She is also a published author of a children's
book.
Along with her many business accomplishments, Wight is
also a founding board member for the Virginia chapter of
eWomen Network. Susan Wight will also be the Founding
Director of the Washington, DC chapter of eWomen Network
which will begin recruiting members in early 2003.
Wight explains her enthusiasm for eWomen, "Before it
was popular, pre-Oprah, I always thought women should help
each other, in business and at home. And I love what I do
now because it's a natural fit. I work with college age kids
at church, and I also serve on the eWomen Network board
because it's an awesome way to help women in business
connect. Mary Kay offers me training and support. I want to
pass that along to other women.
"I decided to join Mary Kay because I work hard
wherever I go, and I had nothing to show for it after
layoffs from Xerox and Hughes Aircraft. I liked the skin
care Mary Kay offered. Now I LOVE the company. It's a strong
sorority and security blanket for women. It treats, trains
and pays us well.," says Wight. Wight goes on to say
anyone can do this business if she is 'teachable' and can
listen to the advice of others who have already succeeded. When asked what she finds
difficult Wight said that women can't always see their
potential and sometimes it is hard to communicate that
potential so each woman can realize it. She feels the most
difficult part of her personal life is to find balance for
family time. She says, "I don't know how women who do
not work for themselves do it!"
Although the support system in the Washington, DC area is
better for professional women than it was when she was
raising her daughter, it is still difficult to juggle home,
family and a career says Wight. She feels that although
there are more resources in place for working women, many
women are choosing to work from home so that balancing work
and family is easier.
Susan currently mentors sales women in Mary Kay, locally
through the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce, the eWomen
Network and her church. She has won the Loudoun County
Chamber of Commerce "Small Business Award" and has
traveled as far away as Brazil to promote Mary Kay. You can
