Proofing Your Home
Michele,
I am a
stay-at-home dad of twins and my babies are on the verge of
crawling. I am getting ready to babyproof my home, but I'm
overwhelmed by all the products I see in the store. Which products
are most important for protecting my boys?
W.S., Reston
Babyproofing is a
trial and error process. Unfortunately, when dealing with a
determined and curious toddler, you have little room for error. The
following are the “must-haves” to babyproofing your home.
- Gates: Gates are not only
a must-have to block off stairs, they're also useful in blocking
off “out of bounds” areas of the home.
The type of gate to buy is also
important; buying incorrectly can be a costly mistake. Remember
that you must install a hardware mounted gate at the top of stairs
to ensure safety-pressure gates are not suitable. Consider your
aesthetic desires, the size of the opening, and your price range
when choosing a gate.
- Latches.
There are different latches to choose
from. The most effective, safest and longest lasting lock is the
magnetic tot-lock. Plastic latches are also effective, but can be
operated by a child sooner than the magnetic lock. Choose your latch
carefully; not all latches work with all cabinets.
- Window locks.
A quality window lock is designed to
prevent the window from opening more than 3 1/2”. However, they
should also have a feature that deactivates them in case of an
emergency. There are several types to choose from, including
adhesive, suction, and hardware-mounted latches. For a more secure
design, you may choose window bars. Check your window type and size
to find which lock will work best for you.
- Electrical safety. Keep
your little ones safe from outlets by using a product called a
slide plate. These plates will replace your existing plate and
blocks a child’s access. Plastic plugs are generally not ideal
as they can present a choking hazard if removed. Power strip
covers are also useful for prevent access to the multiple plugs.
Good luck and stay
safe!
