Coat anything in a doughy crust, and it’s pretty magical. Empanadas are no exception. Empanada fillings can be sweet or savory, and the dough is typically folded over meat, cheese or other tasty fillings. Every country seems to have their own kind of empanada — think Italian calzones or Jamaican patties. In Latin American and Spanish cultures, empanada translates to “coat in bread.”

And what do we have to say about that translation? Yes, please!

National Empanada Day is Sunday, April 8, but do you need an excuse to eat these pockets of happy? While some are baked or fried, sweet or savory, celebrate National Empanada Day at one of these local restaurants!
