MOM NOTES APRIL 2008
April is the month we celebrate FAMILY Magazine’s birthday.
We started publishing our magazine in 1992. As we enter our
seventeenth year of producing the magazine, we’re very
grateful to all of our readers and advertisers for
supporting us and helping us grow into the region’s LARGEST
and MOST READ parenting publication!
April is even more fun for me because I just love birthday
parties. In our family, April and May have always been busy
months for birthday parties as we have several birthdays.
Over the years, we’ve had some great celebrations,
especially with four children. Whether for toddlers,
teenagers or even my husband, I love throwing a great party.
I remember with fondness the great parties we have had, each
one as unique as my four children. Probably the biggest
party challenge came when my son turned nine years old. His
two older sisters had been having slumber parties, so he
wanted one as well. He invited his entire Cub Scout troop,
of which I was the den leader. The party lasted past
midnight and well into the morning hours as nine boys, all
of them nine years old, bounced off the walls and ran all
over the house. I told BJ that was his first and his last
slumber party.
This year BJ will be celebrating his birthday in Iraq on
April 30. He is deployed in xxxxx…. (description to come)
Before he left in January, I promised him I would make
something special for his birthday and send it to him. He
warned me that whatever I sent needed to feed 50 men.
Apparently everyone in his unit knows when he receives
goodies from home.
We have a family tradition of angle food cake for birthdays,
so I will be baking several cakes to send to him. I know
they might not make it there in good shape, but I know BJ
will get a thrill out of opening the boxes and remembering
past birthdays. Certainly we have had some wonderful parties
and we all have great memories of the fun. Although my party
planning days for my children are on the wane, there are
still some things a mom needs to do to celebrate their
birthdays. BJ may be all grown up, but he will always be my
baby boy. I’m delighted that even far away, he’ll have
something from home on his special day.
Becoming a year older is a wonderful celebration for
children. I’ve loved every single one of my children’s
birthday parties; just as I love celebrating their birth and
their growth. They are all great kids and I love them
dearly.
‘Til next month, Happy Parenting!
