MOM NOTES
October 2007
October is upon us and fall is quickly overcoming the Indian
summer. This is a great time of year with crisp days and
splendid, bright colors. It is also the time of year when we
think about creativity and the wonderful enjoyment of
watching our children perform.
In October, kids are getting ready for the big event -
Halloween. It was always an evening to remember in our
household, with a myriad of costumes over the years. One of
my favorite memories is when my middle daughter wanted to be
Annie for Halloween. I adapted a dress pattern and made the
costume myself. She looked adorable! She liked the costume
so much she wore it on weekends and after school. She just
loved pretending to be Annie.
My kids always enjoyed dressing up and putting on a show.
Over the years my children performed in many great plays,
recitals and concerts. One year my youngest daughter was
Glenda, the Good Witch of the North in a school production
of “The Wizard of Oz”. She was beautiful in the gorgeous
Glenda costume and thoroughly enjoyed herself. Many of the
younger students even asked her for her autograph.
I believe that children gain so much from performing or
learning to play a musical instrument. Self discipline,
respect for others, creativity and the joy of performing for
others are only a few of the wonderful experiences they
gain. As their parents, we also gain the feeling of pride
when we see our children perform.
One of my greatest moments of surprise and joy came when my
son, BJ, performed a solo in a choir concert. BJ was eleven
at the time and had only been singing in the choir for one
season. One day he came home and told me that he had been
selected to sing a solo. Of course I was proud and I told
him how excited I was to see him perform.
During the weeks prior to the concert I asked him several
times how the solo was coming. He said great, he was
enjoying the music. I thought the solo would probably be a
few lines or perhaps at most, a minute of BJ in the
spotlight.
We arrived at the concert early so we could sit right up
front and be able to see BJ when his solo time arrived. I
noticed that the program had one song with only BJ’s name
beside it. Could he sing an entire song? Sure enough, when
the time came BJ approached the stage and performed an
entire selection alone. It was beautiful. I still remember
how my jaw dropped when I heard him sing. My husband and I
turned and looked at each other with a look of “Is this BJ
singing?” on our faces. It was amazing.
Our children astound us all the time. Sharing in their
journey of life is a challenge and a pleasure all at the
same time. I feel honored to be a part of this journey.
‘Til November and our Baby and Maternity Resource Guide,
HAPPY PARENTING!
