Dear Readers,
In our home, the kids’ art was refrigerator art. I
love my children’s art projects. I always have.
Refrigerator Art is a wonderful decoration for
today’s kitchen and expression of family pride and
love. I think every home should have some.
We have certainly had a lot of refrigerator art in
our household throughout the years. Sometimes I
rotated the art from the refrigerator to the back
door or to our family bulletin board, surrounding
our family with homemade art. The creations our
children brought home were not always Monets or
Picassos, but because they created it; we always saw
a masterpiece embellished with our child’s
personality and character. Competition for display
space was tough. School notes, award ribbons, art
and outstanding classwork all jockeyed for space on
the front of the fridge. But the artwork’s bright
colors and creativity always shone through.
Stored away in my basement are art treasures created
by all four of my children over the years. My home
office still has one wall dedicated to special
pieces they made. Just stepping into that room
instantly brightens my mood and fills my heart with
warmth and memories.
FAMILIES Magazine is very excited to announce the
winners in our second annual Kid’s Art Contest. This
month’s cover features our overall winner, Meredith
H. from Washington, DC. Only 8 years old, Meredith
entered two pieces of artwork and both were
outstanding. She is amazingly talented.
Congratulations, Meredith.
This year, the talent evident in the contest
submissions amazed all of us at FAMILIES. We were
especially surprised by the young age of many of the
artists. Children age 3 to 14 sent in their
wonderful artwork. Be sure to check out the other
winning contest entries showcased on pages 20 and 22
and on our web site (
www.washingtonFAMILY.com ).
Thank you to each child who took the time to make a
masterpiece for us. It takes bravery to send us your
artwork. Our walls have been brightened by your
creations. We hope you had as much fun creating the
art as we did in choosing this year’s winners. I
would be proud to put any of your artwork in a place
of honor on my refrigerator.
‘Til April, when we will be celebrating our 15th
Birthday, Happy Parenting!
