Dear Readers,
Our April issue celebrates a new name for our
publication - FAMILY Magazine. We’ve listened to
your suggestions over the years and decided now was
the perfect time to make the transition. We hope you
like the change.
While the name has changed, FAMILY Magazine still
upholds the vision I had when I first began
publishing this magazine 15 years ago - a monthly
publication focused on parenting issues with family
at its heart. We began as a mom-and-pop
around-the-kitchen table effort at a time when the
concept of a local parenting publication for the
entire metro Washington area was new. Eventually
parenting publications would make their mark across
the whole country.
My own small, monthly column is a vivid memory for
me over the years. Not because I have spent so many
long hours staring at a blank computer screen
waiting for inspiration, but because it chronicles a
precious time in my life when my children were
growing up. They were my parenting experience, my
passion, and the reason I even thought about
starting a parenting publication. In rereading my
column, I can see the growth of my children and
myself as a mother. My columns have often been
filled with laughter and tears, the very heart of
motherhood. I’ve cherished the opportunity to share
my own journey with you.
On occasion I have heard from readers of our
magazine how much they enjoy my column, because they
can identify with my life story. I hope this is true
for many of you. After all, we are each just moms,
sharing our experiences together.
When my youngest child graduated from high school, I
wrote about her leaving home to go away to college.
I cried when I wrote that story. Later, I received
an email from a reader telling me she too had just
sent her “baby” off to college. She was extremely
touched by my column and we exchanged a few email
notes about our experience. It was truly
heartwarming to share our stories.
At first, writing about my parenting experiences was
difficult. It was hard to put my emotions and
thoughts on paper for the world to read. But now I
find sharing my parenthood story very enjoyable.
From the first moment I looked into my oldest
child’s new born eyes until just last week when I
visited my youngest at college for parent’s weekend,
parenting has been more rewarding than I ever
imagined. Thank you for journeying with me.
This month we celebrate 15 years of creating FAMILY
Magazine. These 15 years have flown by, much like
the years of raising my children. Both the magazine
and my children started with unlimited potential and
have grown in ways I could never have imagined. I am
so proud to be part of the lives of both.
They say time flies whether or not you are having
fun. I can say emphatically, I have certainly had
fun!
‘Till May,
Brenda |
