Dear Readers,
SHHH! It’s a Secret!
I feel like a child whose birthday falls on
Christmas. My birthday is on Mother’s Day this year.
And after last year, I’m sure it will be uneventful
in comparison.
On the Saturday morning of my birthday, I got up at
5AM. I had an all-day event I had to arrive at early
that morning and I didn’t want to go because not
only was it my birthday, but my son had only
recently returned from Iraq. I came downstairs to
make coffee and standing in my kitchen were my two
older daughters. I was so surprised that I kept
asking, “Why are you here? Why are you here?” They
laughed and hugged me as I stood crying with joy. I
turned around and there was my youngest daughter,
recording me with her digital camera. I was now in
shock and so touched by their gesture that I was
speechless. My daughters had decided they would all
come home and attend the event with me to make it
more special, and of course, it was. Although, I am
embarrassed each time someone tells me they have
seen that recording!
The experience was wonderful and I will remember it
forever. After I had the opportunity to look back,
I’ve realized what it meant to me. My children
showed me how much they cared about my happiness.
They knew they could make a difference on my
birthday and they helped me through a job that was
really tough. As a mother, it was an unbelievable
experience.
So I made a decision. Since I was touched this much
by the actions of my children, I wanted to give my
own mother the same enjoyment. I started planning
Mother’s Day 2005. I talked with my brother (there
are only the two of us) and we are surprising my
mother by going to her house for the weekend. My
brother lives in California, I live in Virginia and
my mother lives in Oklahoma; it’s been years since
we’ve all been at Mom’s house together on Mother’s
Day.
If you read this before May 8th and you know my mom,
please don’t tell her. She is very hard to surprise.
My brother and I want our arrival to be a wonderful
event. We have planned several activities and we
hope it all makes for a memorable Mother’s Day for
Mom. If she has half the thrill I had last year, it
will be wonderful. It certainly makes me feel good
to do something special for my mom. I guess I
learned that from my own daughters!
‘Til June, Happy Parenting!
