America’s “Most Perfect Village” - Cooperstown, NY

For many reasons, the village of Cooperstown, NY is a favorite destination for families seeking a getaway that is both educational and fun-packed. This culturally-rich repository of Americana offers unique, family-friendly activities not available in theme parks or big cities. Located about 60 miles from Albany on the shores of Lake Otsego, educational, historical and cultural attractions for all ages abound. Here the country’s past is traced and preserved by the village’s renowned cultural institutions - and by the town itself.

Some of Cooperstown’s educationally-rich and kid-friendly institutions include:

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum

At the National Baseball Hall of Fame, families trace the evolution of baseball from a simple game played on rural pastures and urban sandlots to America’s favorite sport, and in the process, learn about our nation’s change and development throughout the years. The Sandlot Kids’ Club at the National Baseball Hall of Fame is a special educational program designed for children ages 5 – 12. Children who join the club receive a Sandlot Kids’ Club button, a passport to keep track of events they attend, and can participate in a series of interactive events throughout the year, culminating in a November pizza party, featuring a special Hall of Fame surprise!

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum - 25 Main Street, Cooperstown, NY, 888-425-5633, www.baseballhalloffame.org.

October 9 - Carl Erskine: Pitcher Carl Erskine, a 12-year major league veteran, will discuss his baseball career, playing with and against some of the greatest players in baseball history. As a highlight of the Special Abilities Celebration, Erskine will also talk about his son's productive life living with Downs Syndrome.

The Farmers’ Museum

At one of the most exciting living-history museums in the country, costumed interpreters portray the occupations and rhythms of everyday living, from broom making and weaving to milking cows and blacksmithing. This museum presents a superb historical reconstruction that will fascinate adults and children alike.

Kids Learn About New York State History Through a "Museum You Can Ride On"

This year, The Farmers’ Museum will celebrate the grand opening of its newest addition - the Empire State Carousel. The carousel is a historically significant, handcrafted merry-go-round that features designs inspired by New York State’s history and culture. Taking nearly 20 years and 1,000 volunteers to complete, it now shines as a prime example of contemporary folk art. The carousel will introduce the rich heritage of the Empire State through unique programs that tie the museum’s ongoing exhibits with the magic of an operating carousel.

Traditional Crafts, Historic Games and Historic Demonstrations at the Harvest Festival

On September 16th and 17th, The Farmers’ Museum will revive the tradition of an old-time agricultural fair with the annual Harvest Festival. This weekend-long event celebrates the season’s bounty, enabling visitors to experience traditional crafts, food, and entertainment. Activities will include crafts, historic games and horse-drawn wagon rides throughout the village. A Parade of Champions will feature the winning livestock and dairy animals from the museum’s Junior Livestock Show. Throughout the weekend there will be farm activities and domestic demonstrations such as flax processing, rope making, cider pressing, medicine making, and open-hearth food preparation.

Discover the Mysteries of the Lake: Otsego Lake’s Past and Present

On May 16th, The Farmers’ Museum will open its doors to the exhibit, Mysteries of the Lake: Otsego Lake’s Past and Present with a special section designed for children - Otsego Lake Live! Beneath the Surface - A Children’s Interactive Gallery. This part of the exhibit explores the current ecological and conservation issues surrounding Lake Otsego, the “Glimmerglass” of James Fenimore Cooper’s novels and includes an aquarium of fish from the lake and a sample of the Zebra Mussel, which threatens the health of the lake.
